Apple acquires UK-based AI startup VocalIQ

US tech giant Apple has acquired UK-based natural language processing firm VocalIQ. The acquisition has been confirmed by Apple to the Financial Times, but the financial terms of the deal have not been officially divulged by the company. VocalIQ is a small Cambridge, England-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup, which is specifically focused on voice control with automobiles. The startup stems from the University of Cambridge Dialogue Systems Group; and the VocalIQ team is likely to stay put in Cambridge even after the company’s acquisition by Apple. Since the VocalIQ software essentially gives computers the capability to better understand human language, the startup’s acquisition by Apple will apparently enable the tech giant to bolster its ‘Siri’ voice-driven personal assistant.
