Apple hires AI specialist from Carnegie Mellon

An artificial intelligence research from Carnegie Mellon University has joined Apple, Bloomberg reported, saying the company wants to regain lost ground against competitors such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon in machine learning. Russ Salakhutdinov tweeted on 17 October that he will be joining Apple as director of AI research, in addition to his role at the university. He posted a link to an Apple job application page seeking machine learning specialists. The listing said the company was seeking scientists with “experience in Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Optimization, and/or Data Mining.” Salakhutdinov joined Carnegie Mellon earlier this year after spending time at the University of Toronto and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
