Attack of the killer robots

Recently experts and robotics researchers signed an open letter calling for a ban on autonomous weapons. Signatories included physicist Stephen Hawking, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and inventor Elon Musk. “Autonomous weapons select and engage targets without human intervention,” the letter said. Their concern is that these weapons are feasible within years and warn of a ‘third revolution in warfare”. “It’s technically feasible to have weaponised machines, in fact we’ve already got them,” said Craig Horne, State Chairman of the Australian Computer Society. Mr Horne is referring to the guided missiles already being used in the Middle East that are capable of landing on specific targets.
