Baidu’s vision of future: robot taxis, Chinese home gadgets

Chinese Web search company Baidu has unveiled its latest plans to stake out a spot in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence, including a partnership with Santa Clara’s Nvidia to develop driverless cars and taxis, and a home gadget akin to Amazon’s Echo. The company also announced it had received a permit to test self-driving vehicles from the California Department of Motor Vehicles. “We will start testing our autonomous driving technologies on public roads very soon in California,” said Baidu executive Jing Wang in a statement. “Baidu has already built a strong team in Silicon Valley to develop autonomous driving technologies, and being able to do road tests will greatly accelerate our progress.” CEO Robin Li is banking on its growing expertise in artificial intelligence to jump-start a slowing search…
