Elon Musk, others commit B to artificial intelligence firm

Several investors, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and venture capitalist Peter Thiel, have banded together to invest a whopping $1 billion worth of funds into an artificial intelligence research nonprofit. “Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return,” reads the website of OpenAI, which Musk simply describes as a “nonprofit artificial intelligence group.” Musk co-founded the company with Sam Altman, co-founder of tech accelerator startup Y Combinator. Apart from PayPal co-founder Thiel, other people who have contributed toward the $1 billion investment include LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Altman’s Y Combinator co-founder Jessica Livingston.
