In addition, these models can be used as platforms to test new therapeutic approaches that may serve for the treatment of different aspects of disease. At the neurobiological level, drug addiction, including tobacco addiction, is a complex behavioral disorder that encompasses drug-induced alterations of synaptic mechanisms related to learning and memory processes as well as a pathological recruitment of stress-related brain systems.
