Intel to Acquire AI Semiconductor Startup Movidius

Intel Corp. will acquire Movidius, a startup building semiconductors that allow autonomous devices to “see” in three dimensions, the companies announced this week. Josh Walden, general manager of Intel’s New Technology Group, wrote on Monday that the acquisition will help develop Intel’s RealSense depth-sensing cameras, which the company is looking to deploy in augmented, virtual and merged reality systems as well as drones, robotics and digital security cameras. He added that San Mateo, Calif.-based Movidius will also provide artificial intelligence algorithms that enhance deep learning, natural interactions and more in computer networks.
