Let us not forget that machines’ intelligence is artificial

Comments Print   October 19, 2015 George Makari (“The soul of the human machine,” Opinion, Oct. 13) makes a clear and convincing argument against putting too much faith in looking to machines for wisdom and creativity. AI is, after all, ARTIFICIAL intelligence. Granted, human intelligence isn’t always that intelligent, and we can be greatly helped by digital intelligence. My daily functioning would be impeded without my computer and iPhone, which I rarely use as a phone. I prefer to think of my digital aids as CAC, or computer-aided cognition, which was the name of the computer center where I’d take my deck of punched cards to be processed when I worked in the field in the 1960s.
