Pascal-Based NVIDIA GPUs to Power Supercomputer

The Piz Daint system, an upgraded variant of Europe’s fastest supercomputer, at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) in Lugano in Switzerland will be equipped with Pascal™ architecture-based NVIDIA® Tesla® GPU accelerators. The announcement was made today by NVIDIA. While, upgrading will boost the supercomputer’s speed by more than twofold, the maximum system output is likely to be generated by Tesla GPUs. At present, Piz Daint delivers 7.8 petaflops of computing performance, putting it on the seventh number of the latest TOP500 list of the fastest supercomputers in world. The upgrading of the supercomputer is scheduled for later this year by CSCS by installing 4,500 Pascal-based GPUs. Pascal is by far the most superior GPU architecture that is capable of powering the most computationally demanding applications by delivering unparalleled performance…
