Job Summary:

Performs responsible research work of a complex nature that requires planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the supervisor.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Works collaboratively with other lab members to experimentally support projects and ensure that projects move forward–significant experience in molecular biology and immunohistochemistry is required.
  • Responsible for transgenic mouse colony management, including weaning, ear tagging, obtaining and processing tissue samples, genotyping and PCR.
  • Manages laboratory supplies and inventory.
  • Plans, directs and conducts research experiments.
  • Evaluates and analyzes data.
  • Develops research techniques and performs applications required for specific research projects.
  • May conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Documents results of experiments and reports to principal investigators.
  • Trains and orients less experienced research staff.
  • May supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Required: Master’s degree in a basic science or equivalent*.
  • Experience: Required: No experience required.
  • Preferred: experience with management of transgenic mouse colony, genotyping, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry.
  • *NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree and two years of directly related experience is considered equivalent to a Master’s degree.

Other Skills:

  • Requires precision in preparing materials and recording data.
  • Supervision: Not normally required to supervise others.
  • Working Conditions: There is periodic exposure to unpleasant conditions but the work is still viewed as relatively comfortable in a laboratory environment.
  • Physical Requirements: Rarely required to exert physical effort.
  • Physical Risk: Frequently handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job- related injury, such as those found in an ordinary laboratory or clinic environment.
