Develop new functional and structural methods in brain to determine what characteristics of synapses are necessary and sufficient for learning and memory. Essential Functions Design and implement approaches to understand the structural basis of synaptic plasticity during long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), development, learning and memory. Adapt methods for use in transgenic mouse models. Use standard protocols and develop new neurophysiological protocols in rat and mouse brain slices to meet strict criteria for also obtaining excellent ultrastructural preservation of filopodia, synapses, dendrites, axons, perisynaptic astroglia, and subcellular components. Knowledge of electron microscopy is helpful but not essential towards these goals.
