A new £10million laboratory is being set up to make sure robots never rule the world in a 21st century science fiction nightmare. The University of Cambridge is launching a new research centre to explore the opportunities – and challenges – to humanity from the development of artificial intelligence. Human-level intelligence is familiar in biological terms but technology and science are now converging towards a future in which similar intelligence can be created in computers. It is difficult to predict when this will happen but some researchers suggest that human-level AI will be created before the year 2099 bringing the prospect of machines becoming much more intelligent than humans.
