Via Ben Thompson: “Over the last couple of weeks I have noted the progress of the match between AlphaGo, the Google-created Go-playing program, and Lee Se-Dol, the best Go player in the world. AlphaGo’s 4-1 victory is significant because Go was long thought-to be the one perfect-information game that computers could not win, at least not anytime soon. “In an interview with The Verge, DeepMind (the Google subsidiary that created AlphaGo) founder Demis Hassabis said: “Actually, the AlphaGo algorithm, this is something we’re going to try in the next few months — we think we could get rid of the supervised learning starting point and just do it completely from self-play, literally starting from nothing.
