White House Urges Light Regulatory Touch on Artificial Intelligence

The Obama administration released a report on the federal government’s role in the development of artificial intelligence systems, or AI, on Wednesday, suggesting that agencies take a light-touch regulatory approach on the emerging technology. Researchers at the White House’s National Science and Technology Council took a broadly positive view of the role of AI in America’s future. “AI holds the potential to be a major driver of economic growth and social progress, if industry, civil society, government, and the public work together to support development of the technology with thoughtful attention to its potential and to managing its risks,” the researchers wrote.
