AI lends a hand in classification of messy galaxies

Analysis of data from telescopes is a complex affair and when it comes to looking inside galaxies, there have been few automated solutions. This is what researchers at Australian National University targeted using artificial intelligence and neural networks. Researcher have used artificial intelligence to create a software that helps analyse spectra of messy galaxies to distinguish between light from stars forming, matter falling into black holes, and supersonic galactic winds. The data is needed to better understand how galaxies live and die and what’s at their core. Manual examination of data has been the only option as all automated means had failed and work by hand is a painstaking process that takes months at a time.
