Artificial intelligence improving the future

People are familiar with eyeglasses, wheelchairs, walkers, artificial hips, artificial knees and hearing aids; all are devices that improve physical function. Modern information technology, so-called expert systems, improves mental function by enabling users to understand more and occasionally to predict and improve the future. Expert systems use powerful computers to collect, store and analyze massive amounts of information, and to use the information to predict the future. During our daily lives, we leave an information footprint. Surveillance cameras take pictures that track our activity. Credit card organizations and vendors keep track of our preferences. When we use the internet to communicate with people, our writings can even be analyzed to estimate our chances of becoming ill with flu trackers. Expert systems use information to identify people most at risk of particular illnesses, including risks of falling and those at risk of receiving unnecessary medication. People who are most likely to fall are people who have muscle weakness, people with walking and balance problems, people with poor eyesight, people whose blood pressure goes down when they stand up, people with chronic disease, people who take psychoactive medication and people who live in houses with poor stair design.
