The ability to detect and track particular structures automatically in an image sequence is important in many applications, from security monitoring, traffic management, through to biology. The project emphasises the use of machine learning and big data methods to accurately identify, track and quantify the behavior of cellular structures in living cells. We will focus on two very different structures: a dynamic network of flexible tubules (the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER) and small, round particles (the endosome).The ER is a structure in a cell that synthesises building blocks of life such as proteins that will be exported out of the cell (e.g. insulin). The endosome carries materials such as nutrients that are imported into the cell. Both the ER and endosome move dynamically using motor proteins that walk along tracks…
