AWS – usage of spot instances and persistence

I would love to obtain best practices of running AWS spot instances for Kaggle Competitions. Let me know any tips in order to be up-and-running quicly again after one might get priced out of spot instances / instances get terminated. I had so far stored my data on a seperate EBS volume (probably good idea) but had not set my root device to persist (probably bad idea – as i have reinstall all packages again). I am using a G2x2 with SSD root device. Does one indeed prevent deletion of all packages and software (e.g. CUDA, etc.) if one simply makes the root device persistent? any help welcome!
