Education Today: Montessori making pupils ‘global ready’

By Jessica Hayes For the last two years of college, I worked at a small (pre-SuperCenter) Wal-Mart. There were a few college students, but it was mainly people from the community. In this job, I met someone who had never been out of the state — not even to Oklahoma or Missouri. While I remember being surprised then, today I realize this is probably not uncommon. First person experiences, such as traveling, provide children with learning opportunities not found in books or on the screen. It is the reason “going out” trips are such a critical piece of Montessori curriculum. Regular readers of this column may recall that for Dr. Maria Montessori, the most important part of the Montessori curriculum was the cultural work — history, geography, science and literature.…
