Getting into Data Science from a different field?

Hello. Not 100% sure where this goes but… I currently work in corporate finance (at a data company ironically) and this is my first job, two years in. I was wondering what the best course of action for crossing into data science is? My undergrad minor was comp sci/programming and I took some database courses (SQL, Python), but aside from that my background basically has nothing to do with data science. Unless you count slaving over excel sheets/financial systems and crunching numbers. At my current company there is little chance of crossing over into a data science role as the people in those roles now are all PHDs and whatnot. So I would likely be starting fresh somewhere else.
