Machine Learning: A Cyberthreat Weapon

Even a casual follower of the IT industry knows that cybersecurity is a big issue. There’s an endless stream of reports from security software developers, global network operators, and consultancies cataloguing their latest findings on the growing volume—and sophistication—of cyberthreats. One variation on this theme is becoming more strident: how the massive volume of dumb, networked “things” (created by the rapid growth of the Internet of Things) represents a danger that dwarfs those presented by traditional networks. In the space of a month, those doomsayers have been amply vindicated. At the end of September 2016, the Web site of well-known security blogger Brian Krebs was taken down by what was said to be the largest distributed-denial-of-service attack ever seen.
