Microsoft Corporation Open Sources Its Deep Learning Toolkit

Microsoft Corporation has open sourced the artificial intelligence framework it uses to power speech recognition in Skype Translation and Cortana virtual assistant applications. The machine learning software called Computational Network Toolkit (CNTK) is now available to anyone under an MIT license. The company said that the toolkit is more efficient than Mountain View, California-based Internet giant’s TensorFlow and other competing tools like Theano, Torch and Caffe. The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant announced Monday that it is moving the repository for its CNTK software from the company’s CodePlex source code repository to GitHub, the popular website for hosting open-source projects. According to Venture Beat, Microsoft Corporation is also dropping the company’s research license, which limits the software to non-commercial uses, in favor of a more permissive MIT license.
