Scientist’s studies in dementia awarded top research prize

A scientist from St Albans has been awarded a top European research award for her studies in dementia. Rita Guerreiro is an Alzheimer’s Society senior researcher at the University College London’s department of Molecular Neuroscience and her innovative work led to the identification of a new genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. This is the first discovery of such a gene for the condition in 15 years. Her efforts were awarded the Fondazione Gino Galletti Neuroscience Prize 2015. Ms Guerreiro, 35, is originally from Estremoz, Portugal, but now lives in St Albans.
