Smartphones May Soon Recognize Faces

Wall Street Journal reports today that Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has been working with chip maker Movidius to teach smartphones facial recognition which has a survival value for humans. Although Google is far from any tech industry to have trained machines to recognize faces, its technology will be embedded in smartphones’ hardware that will identify faces and objects without being supported by large data centers. It would be similar to any offline dictionary. Smartphones will have data computing ability inside them. The machine-learned technology will be capable of identifying objects apart from faces. Consequently, it can have a broad range of applications such as helping blind people, translating signs, and authorizing transactions.
