South by Southwest Cancels Panels on Sexism in Game Industry

South by Southwest Interactive canceled two panels, about sexual harassment and gaming culture, after threats of violence at the annual technology event. It’s the latest incident in an ugly online debate, dubbed Gamergate, over sexism in the industry. The threats, which weren’t described in detail, undermined the organizers’ ability to maintain civil dialogue during the panels, Hugh Forrest, director of SXSW Interactive, wrote in a blog post on Monday. “In the seven days since announcing these two sessions, SXSW has received numerous threats of on-site violence related to this programming,” Forrest wrote. “Maintaining civil and respectful dialogue within the big tent is more important than any particular session.” The debate has raged for more than a year, with industry critics questioning the way women are portrayed in video games, and how…
