The computer writing new episodes of ‘Friends’

A Scottish cartoonist has programmed his computer to write new episodes of ‘Friends’ scripts as part of an AI experiment. While ‘Friends’ creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman may feel flustered about having this creativity bested by a computer, Scottish cartoonist Andy Herd of Dundee is enjoying the fruits of his labour after procedurally generating new scripts for the 90s sitcom. Herd began generating new episodes of ‘Friends’ after uploading every episode of the show and then using Google’s artificial intelligence engine machine learning library TensorFlow. “It works by predicting the next letter to follow a given sequence of letters, and the predictions are determined by what it learned about language from the Friends dialogue provided,” he told The Daily Beast. “I’ve been reading up about machine learning in my…
